Where Is Gold Found in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa?

Most gold in KPK is placer gold in the Indus and Kabul river sands around Nowshera, Swabi and Kohat. Where it occurs, who can mine it, and what a detector can do.

Customers in Peshawar often ask where gold is actually found in the province. The short answer: most of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s known gold is placer gold — fine particles carried down by rivers and deposited in sand and gravel — rather than nuggets sitting in the hills.

The Indus River

The Indus is the main source. Geologists have studied placer gold along the stretch from Ghazi to Kund, and the provincial government has divided the river corridor from Kohistan down to Dera Ismail Khan into mining blocks. Blocks between Swabi and Kohat have been auctioned to private companies on ten-year leases.

The Kabul River and the confluence

Placer gold is also found along the Kabul River around Nowshera and where the Kabul meets the Indus near Attock — an area that has been the subject of geophysical and geochemical surveys for gold.

Who is allowed to take it?

River gold is a mineral resource, so extraction is licensed by the Minerals Development Department, and the Indus blocks are held under lease. Unlicensed excavation along the riverbanks is illegal and has been the subject of investigations and crackdowns, including a probe reported in September 2026 into large-scale unauthorised mining in Nowshera, Swabi and Kohat. Check with the Department before prospecting anywhere on these rivers.

Can a metal detector find river gold?

Mostly no, and it is better to know that before you buy. The gold in Indus and Kabul river sands is usually very fine — flakes and dust too small for any detector to pick up individually; it is recovered by washing and panning the sand. Detectors come into their own where gold occurs as nuggets, for example in some stream gravels and weathered hill ground. For those, a high-frequency VLF gold detector finds small pieces near the surface and a PI machine reaches larger nuggets deeper.

Gold and old treasure are different things
