How to Use a Metal Detector: A Beginner’s Step-by-Step Guide

Most new detector owners miss good targets in their first weeks — not because the machine is weak, but because of a few habits nobody taught them. Follow these steps and you will find more from day one.

1. Set up and charge

Assemble the shaft so the coil sits flat just above the ground when your arm is relaxed and the armrest sits below your elbow. Fully charge the battery or fit fresh cells, and connect headphones — faint deep signals are easy to miss through the speaker.

2. Practise at home first

Bury a few test items — a coin, a ring, a nail, a bottle cap — at different depths in your garden and note what each one sounds like and what number it shows. Ten minutes of this teaches you more than an hour in the field.

3. Ground balance and noise cancel

At your search site, run noise cancel to pick a quiet channel, then ground balance so the detector ignores the minerals in the soil. Many modern machines do this automatically; on others you pump the coil up and down over clean ground. Re-balance when the ground changes.

4. Choose a mode and discrimination

Start in the general or "all metal" mode rather than rejecting a lot of targets. Heavy discrimination hides good targets along with the junk. As you learn your machine’s tones, you can add discrimination gradually.

5. Sweep slowly and low

• Keep the coil parallel to the ground and just above it — lifting it at the end of each swing costs depth.
• Sweep side to side at a slow, steady pace.
• Step forward by about half a coil width each time so the sweeps overlap.
• Work in straight lines so you do not skip ground.

6. Pinpoint, dig and recover

When you get a repeatable signal, sweep across it in an X from two directions to find the centre. Cut a neat flap of soil, check the hole and the loose soil with a pinpointer, recover the target, then replace the soil and press it down.

7. Detect responsibly
